Throughout the series, we see a quiet and meek Esther attempting to flee her home and unhappy marriage, later landing and discovering herself in Berlin. (Unorthodox received an Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special.) To prepare for the film, Haas had to undergo several challenges, including learning Yiddish and getting her head shaved on-screen.
